Seaweed, or halamang-dagat, is a red-to-brown grass of the sea that is used as food and raw material in the manufacture of industrial products such as alginate, agar and carrageenan.

Caraga has a total area of 531.80 hectares for seaweed production.  Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte are the major seaweed-producing provinces, with existing production areas of 305.8 hectares and 58.27 hectares, respectively.  In 2003, the region ranked third in Mindanao in seaweed production with 16,701.50 metric tons.

The officers and representatives of the different associations of seaweed producers and the local buyers and traders make up the seaweed cluster.  There are 495 seaweed growers region-wide, which are concentrated in the provinces of Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte.

Caraga’s dried seaweeds are sold to the local traders/buyers in Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. Once the required volume is achieved, these traders sell their stocks to the seaweed processors in Cebu.

The cluster aims to make Caraga a major producer and processor of export quality seaweed products.  To achieve this, the cluster will ensure sustainable production of fresh, dried and processed seaweed conforming to export quality & HACCP standards, thus improving marketability and increasing competitiveness of their products.

Supporting its vision and mission are the following cluster goals:

·        Expand production areas by 2,000 hectares in the next 5 years

·        Lobby with local government units for the establishment of nurseries and demo farms in the seaweed-producing areas to address the lack of supply of planting materials

·        Lobby with BFAR to conduct research activities to eliminate the “ice-ice” disease
