Banana (Musa sp.) is one of the most common and widely grown fruit crops in the Philippines. It is in fact one of the country’s major dollar earners.
Banana Cluster is composed by the banana producers of Cavendish, Cardava, Latundan and Lakatan, banana chips processors, traders,
academe, concerned government agencies and local government units. Major industry
players such as the Celebes Agricultural Corporation and Cabadbaran Fruits Corporation are members of the cluster.
The Celebes Agricultural, Inc. is one of the pioneering banana chips processors in Mindanao. Its products are exported to Japan and Europe.
The Cabadbaran Fruits Corporation, a subsidiary of the AMS
Corporation, has a 300-hectare Cavendish plantation in Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte.
The company is also planning for the establishment of a 2,000-hectare plantation in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.
For the local banana chip producer, the major challenge faced by the banana industry leans more on the lack of
supply of raw material requirement from the local market. The Celebes Agricultural, Inc., with a capacity of 70 tons per day,
had to source out most of its raw material requirement from other areas in Mindanao.
Banana cluster envisions itself to become a leading producer of organically grown and superior quality banana marketed by
innovative and sustainable growers working within an environment of strong business collaboration among stakeholders. It aims
to produce the best quality, organically-fresh and processed banana using environment-friendly farming systems, thereby increasing
Banana cluster aims to expand its production area by 10,000 hectares in the next 5 years.
Other programs that the cluster wants to implement are the following:
Provision of technical support, training and extension services to local banana farmers;
Promote integrated farming and inter-cropping systems in order to increase the farmer’s
Facilitate the establishment of tissue culture laboratories in the provinces to support
the expansion program; and
Implement regular marketing activities for the cluster.
